The company runs a community cafe for the local community in Basford, a deprived area in North Nottingham. During the financial year 2022 - 2023, the cafe has benefitted the local community in the following ways:- It has consistently opened its doors as a Place of Welcome for 3 days a week, 48 weeks of the year, during the hours of 10am - 2pm- It has offered a safe, welcoming space for around 50 local people, through the year, to sit and enjoy company with others with affordable, healthy hot meals, thereby reducing loneliness and isolation, and increasing participation in the local community-The cafe has provided part time employment for two local women, and volunteering opportunities for 6 local residents, building up self confidence and skills, and improving mental health and wellbeing-The cafe has also provided a delivery service of hot meals to 6 housebound residents in the community 5 days a week, enabling interaction and conversation with those who would otherwise feel isolated- We have participated in the Fare Share scheme 4days a week, to collect leftover food from Tesco and distribute to those in need in the community
The company's stakeholders are the customers of the cafe and the local community. We are always talking to and listening to our customers to be aware of their experience in the cafe. Our aim is to provide a safe and welcoming space for everyone. Our research has led us to offer lifts to a few households who would otherwise not be able to come out to the cafe as often as they would like to.The gratitude expressed by those who come to the cafe is evident in their verbal thanks and in the sense of health and wellbeing as they chat, share memories and laugh with their friends, especially for those who live on their own and have been so isolated during the pandemic. We trialled a Film afternoon during the heatwave, where gathering in the cafe, which is run in the church building, offered a cooler space than at home. It was well received and ran for a several more weeks.Following an offer from our Asda community champion, we started a weekly Bingo session, at the end of the Monday cafe session, which offers mental stimulation and companionship amongst our regular customers. It also provides an opportunity for the customers to help each other where some have poor sight and so are happy to be included while they are helped to mark their tickets, or limited mobility, and others are able to collect their prizes.
