In May 2020, during the wake of COVID-19, Project: Blueprint funded the procurement and installation of 8 hand-washing units in rural & peri-urban communities in Kampala, Uganda in partnership with Kids Club Kampala (Charity No: 1152451).The hand-washing units are regularly re-stocked with soap and re-filled with water providing a continuous supply of clean water for the community members to use, preventing the spread of infectious diseases and germs throughout their daily activities. The community have invested their own time and effort into the maintenance of the units through community-led initiatives to promote their use and educate the importance of good hygiene. The first 4 units reached over 50,000 people.Project: Blueprint has also been continuing another project - Project: Kestrel.Project: Kestrel is a student-led project set-up by Project: Blueprint, in partnership with Sheffield University, whose mission is to design and build an autonomous drone to deliver medical supplies between rural communities in East Africa.Over the financial year, Project: Blueprint have maintained the projects progress facilitating the students to build an initial prototype of the drone and perform flight tests. The final community beneficiary are the rural communities the drone will serve, but the primary beneficiary in this phase of the project are the students themselves - as Project: Blueprint's activities have benefited them by providing a platform for the students to apply their University-taught knowledge and learn new engineering skills in an environment that inspires them to use their technical knowledge and skills to help others.
As part of Project: Blueprint's initiative to install the handwashing units in Kampala, a major stakeholder were our partner charity Kids Club Kampala (KCK) with whom we collaborated with remotely. The consultations with KCK involved the project planning discussions to decide the scope of the project (the number of units to be procured, the candidate locations to install the units, timescales of installations) and the responsibilities of Project: Blueprint and KCK.Following installation, KCK shared pictures and community feedback with us which featured successful installations and messages of gratitude. The actions taken from Kids Club's and the community's feedback, due to outstanding positive feedback, has been to hold a reserve of funds for future handwashing stations and hygiene initiatives.
