Our principal object is to advance environmental improvement and promote sustainable practices with regard to packaging and waste. We do this by supporting volunteer run community action groups in the worldwide Trash Hero network. These groups or 'chapters' organise regular cleanups, offering hands on learning about the environmental impact of single use plastic and provide simple solutions to reduce or avoid its use. Activities are open to all.Trash Hero GB (THGB) supports the overseas programmes of Trash Hero World (THW), a tax-exempt, not for profit association for the public benefit registered in Switzerland, in the form of personnel / expertise. THGB does not directly run any programmes itself, nor does it (currently) fund any material costs. Our primary goal for this financial year, and over the next 3 - 5 years, are to support and develop Trash Hero chapters in Southeast Asia to enable them to become sustainable and autonomous. To achieve this goal, we employ a Programme Director who works with our colleagues across the global network, building capacity to deliver long-term programmes that address the root causes of plastic pollution in communities and enable behavioural change. This position is currently fully funded by THW.Our secondary goals are to establish Trash Hero chapters in the UK, to cooperate with other organisations working on plastic pollution locally and to raise funds to support all our activities here and overseas. THGB works closely with THW to:- support Trash Hero volunteers, chapters and national organisations- ensure that programme quality standards are met and- leverage resources and increase impact across the network. Some highlights of THGB's work that has benefited the community are listed below:- launched a new Kids & Education programme, rolled out to Thailand, Indonesia and Myanmar chapters in both English and local languages- produced additional education materials (videos, posters etc) to raise awareness about plastic pollution for adults and children- responded to requests from chapters for marketing materials and other resources to help deliver programmes on the ground- facilitated the creation of country offices to coordinate local Trash Hero chapters in Indonesia and Thailand, provided on going training and support to these offices- produced a 'Chapter Handbook' (volunteer training guide) introducing quality and operating standards/procedures in English, Thai and Indonesian- built in country mentor teams for volunteers and organised on-site training and development for 510 volunteer leaders- handled daily operational tasks for all programmes and improved global PR and social media presence- in 2018, THW programmes were delivered in 106 locations across 11 countries, engaging more than 73,000 volunteers to collect 287+ tons of rubbish. This increased to 160 locations in 15 counties with 114,500 volunteers collecting 546+ tons of rubbish in the first 10 months of 2019- we distributed 36,080 Trash Hero branded reusable stainless steel water bottles, saving the use of almost 13.2 million single use equivalents- 14, 450 reusable shopping bags were also distributed, saving 5.3 million single use bags. Both 'saved' estimates are based on daily use of a reusable item for a year. While Trash Hero GB (THGB) does not implement its own overseas programmes, it does seek to address issues of plastic pollution within the UK. There is a strong link between our global work and the trash we produce here within our borders. Many Southeast Asian countries that Trash Hero operates in have been burdened with thousands of tonnes of our exported rubbish, escalating their existing waste crises. We have however made significant progress on our goal of starting local Trash Hero chapters and adapting the global programmes to be delivered in the UK context. We hope to be able to launch these soon.
Our external 'community of interest' is broadly defined as the public in general, worldwide. More specifically it includes the grassroots communities in which Trash Hero chapters are present, the volunteers who serve them and the global support and coordination network of which we are part.In this financial year, THGB attended meetings twice a week with the team of THW. This helped us better understand how we can provide and coordinate support across the network as it grows. We also held regular meetings with our Southeast Asian country leaders. Together they represent around 80% of Trash Hero volunteers globally so we were able to stay in direct contact with the grassroots at all times. All these meetings were video conferences or calls held online.Twice a year THGB helps to organise 'Family Meetings', a three-day residential training camp for new and existing volunteers in Southeast Asia. These meetings help develop community leadership skills, improve programme standards and provide education on the latest issues and developments in the fields of plastic pollution and community waste management. They are also useful venues for us to get feedback to improve programme delivery and consult our volunteers on various issues. The Family Meetings are held in country and funded by THW.Towards the end of this financial year we recruited some additional UK based volunteers to help us develop our presence here, with the view to starting chapters and CSR activities. A website and social media presence were created to open a dialogue with potential partners.
