REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES |
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST MARCH 2023 |
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES |
The Charity is committed to nurturing the potential of children, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility through: |
Every Child Matters (ECM) |
Ultimately, all of the work that we do at Young People Matter is geared towards ensuring that we are providing the necessary support which children and young people need to: |
Be Healthy: Improved mental, physical and emotional health for children through play. Particular activities promote healthy eating, personal welfare, self-esteem and physical movement in and outside of the play setting. |
Stay Safe: A secure, supportive group that develops children's own support mechanisms and an environment that is free from hazards. Play-based educational activities that promote safety and well-being and help to develop confident children. |
Enjoy and Achieve: Fun with friends and wide opportunities for success. Taking on appropriate challenges and responsibilities and helping others to do the same. |
Make a Positive Contribution: Being involved in designing the activities, supportive roles to newcomers and as monitors, speaking up and contributing as a member of the community. Helping others through organised events. |
Achieve Economic Wellbeing: Encouraging positive attitudes to self and helping parents and other adults develop employable skills. Positive models of working life and developing a 'can do' attitude; problem solving and social skills. |
When planning our activities for the year, the Charity has considered the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit. |
Meeting The Need |
The need for local, quality, flexible and affordable play activities is highly essential to the well-being of children and young people. This is even more so important within inner cities where play space is often not practically accessible to children and young people and where the pressures on families overall are greater. We are finding that more schools are requiring our after school club services within their school, more need then we are able to meet at times. |
For numerous reasons, it is not always possible for children's social, physical, and creative needs to be met in full by their parents and/or carers'. Attending an after-school club or holiday play scheme can help to alleviate the tensions which are created by poor housing, traffic, crime levels and other social welfare issues. Although schools are now required by the Government's extended services agenda to facilitate out-of-school services, not all schools have the capacity or the will to meet the new challenge of running a sustainable out-of-school provision. |
We have identified and attempted to address this issue by providing our services, namely our breakfast and after school clubs, in several primary school settings across South London. Facilitating these provisions has enabled our organisation to further enhance our working knowledge and understanding of the processes and procedures involved in operating within such settings. Additionally it has provided our staff members, including volunteers, with the opportunity to gain vital experience by enabling them to liaise closely with teachers and support workers who have the expertise in specific areas relating to children and young people. Where the opportunity arises, we shall continue to approach schools that do not currently have these provisions and seek to bring the Young People Matter experience to as many children and young people across London as possible. |
As an organisation, we continuously strive to find ways to meet the holistic needs of young people and society as a whole. Teaching young people basic but fundamental life lessons can refresh them and provide them with the much needed support and encouragement they need to choose a more positive path. Our dedicated and trained staff team are equipped to relate to children, young people and older youth in a way that schools and educational/academic establishments are often unable to. |

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES |
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST MARCH 2023 |
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES |
Although our primary beneficiaries are children and young people, we aim to continually expand our reach with regard to those who are able to benefit from the work that we do. In recent years, we have steadily increased our involvement with other community groups, namely seniors, the elderly, disabled local residents, lone parents and unemployed individuals. |
We continue to place a huge emphasis on community cohesion, with quarterly themed events being held to bring people together. Such events enable individuals, families and groups who would not normally interact with each other to do so. |
Young People Matter is a multi-disciplinary community anchor group making a positive difference, by doing things positively, different! |
Our philosophy |
More than a slogan and much more than just our name, "Young People Matter" is our core philosophy and roots our practices to our values. |
Since 2007, Young People Matter (YPM) @YPMCharity has been leading a revolution in youth and childcare practice, intergenerational activities, and community leadership by offering a raft of holistic services and provisions throughout the London borough of Lambeth. |
In 2022-23, we reached nearly 1,090 children, young people, parents and carers through our cluster of childcare and community services and partnerships. |
As we inched our way further and further towards normality during a continued period of uncertainty in the wake of the pandemic, we are proud to have supported over 1,090 children, young people, parents, and carers. We resumed our full raft of wraparound care services with our partner schools, and trialled a few new initiatives to further enhance the quality of engagement the children experience with us. |
As children and young people faced another year of uncertainty and disruption as a result of the pandemic, many missed school and struggled with their mental health and wellbeing |
HOW WE MADE A DIFFERENCE |
Together with our local community partners throughout Lambeth, we supported over 1,090 children, young people, parents, and carers |
We reached: |
- An average 180 children through our wraparound childcare services after and before school per week |
- Supported and provided positive activities for 353 school children and young people during term time |
- Supported 110 families during summer and half term care |

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE |
Charitable activities |
EXPANSION: This year we expanded the services that we offer, now including Dance classes, DJ workshops and an external Sports provider. We opened a new after school club in the Oval Area. |
REACH: Thanks to increased partnerships, we worked with more children and young people, seniors, adults and isolated refugees than ever before. |
HEALTH: We continued our Kids Café, and increased our sport related activities throughout the half term and summer camps |
DIGITAL ACCESS: The continual development of our tech resources has resulted in greater ease of access for families |
LEADERSHIP: Supported successful cluster funding application for local orgs operating children and youth services in North Lambeth, who are usually overlooked for funding in comparison to the more popular wards and regions of the borough |
New Activities |
Breaking into The Creative Industries: We worked with ScreenSkills supported by Renaissance Studios on the "Getting Into the Screen Industries" outreach campaign: An impressive cohort of 40 individuals achieved accreditation in the screen industries through our in-person and online workshops. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone for each participant and underscores our commitment to empowering aspiring professionals in the creative realm. |
The comprehensive program comprised five modules meticulously designed to guide individuals seeking their entry into the industries. Each module, spanning Introduction, Identifying the right role, Finding work, Applying for work, and Performing well, provided participants with essential knowledge and skills in compact sessions. The requirement to complete all five modules ensured a comprehensive understanding and mastery of the subject matter, culminating in the issuance of a valuable free certificate. |
Notably, upon completion, participants were informed of the ScreenSkills bursary, an exciting opportunity offering cash grants to alleviate obstacles and enhance career progression within the screen industries. We encouraged participants to creatively explore funding possibilities for various professional development needs and continued to support the cohort throughout the year with opportunities. |
Committed to excellence! |
We want every person to have the best possible experience with us; |
Our 4 Key messages: |
1. We are a community anchor group |
2. We provide safe places for children and young people |
3. We take a holistic approach to support |
4. We are a social connector accessible to all |

RETURN TO THE OLD LAUNDRY, STOCKWELL |
The return to The Old Laundry in Stockwell is not just a homecoming for Young People Matter; it's a joyous reunion to a space that pulsates with life and community spirit. More than just our headquarters, The Old Laundry is a dynamic hub that warmly embraces residents from the borough and now houses the Hyde Housing team under strategic new management working to make a better impact on the lives of local residents. This renewal is made possible through our steadfast partnerships with Hyde and the local Tenants and Residents Association, which have been vital in creating an even more inclusive and vibrant space. |
In renewed collaboration with Hyde Housing and the local Residents' Associations, The Old Laundry is set to become a beacon of unity, welcoming individuals of all ages, genders, and ethnicities. We are aware that forming patrnerships and relationships is very important as each relationship offers a different resource and/or distinctive characteristic. We are constantly seeking to form new working relationships and partnerships with organisations, businesses, and individuals who will be able to assist Young People Matter in achieving our aims and goals. |
Going concern |
The charity applied for and received grants although they were lower than last year. Parents fees collected increased in the year. The total income in the year was £417,382 (2022: £372,039) which was lower than the total expenditure of £396,148 (2022: £394,334) leading to a surplus of £21,234 (2022: Deficit £22,295). The surplus earned led to a decrease in the deficit carried from £23,158 to £1924. |
The Trustees are aware of the financial issue and are looking at possible ways of securing funding to boost the charitable activities. Therefore the trustees believe that it is appropriate for this reason to continue to adopt the going concern basis in preparing the financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2023. |
PLANS FUTURE THE FUTURE |
In 2023-24 Young People Matter will continue to support, nurture, and empower the people from within the communities in which we work. We will be amplifying the voices of East African women. Enabling even more employment success stories for our youth. Helping to reduce loneliness and isolation by building a network of digital resilience for our seniors. Engaging more young people with positive youth development. Increasing community engagement. Advancing social inclusion and promoting more opportunities for every young person to learn, grow and thrive. |
We will continue to honour our commitment to providing low cost or free wraparound services for the most vulnerable and at-risk children in need, whilst working with schools and statutory agencies to support families. |
In 2024 and beyond, we will continue our strategy of developing and growing support networks, signposts and working partnerships with likeminded individuals, organisations, and businesses in order to better serve and greater impact our community. |
